The Banana Vaccine

What this vaccine entails (how does it work)

Why was this genetic engineering undertaken?

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) affects 350 Million people in the world. The vaccination used now takes 2-3 injections. Why go through all that effort if theres the possibility of vaccination in just one bite of the genetically engineered banana.

The vaccines job is to expose your immune system to a very small part of the disease that is dead or weak so it does not make you sick, so your antibodies can fight this and grow an immunity to it.

This diagrams shows the formation of a potato vaccine but the same process is used for the banana vaccine.

How has this vaccine helped or harmed humans?

This genetically engineered vaccine is still going through trialing and testing but is predicted to be cheaper and faster working than the normal injection.

A few facts..

Reference

  • Other plant vaccines have been , but banana has come to be the best fruit to use as it grows widely in developing countries and is liked by most children.
  • Using plants is alot cheaper than using an injection.
