He became established as an authority on ocean exploration and science
He began early in the century with 3 voyages that took him all the way to Europe, around the world and along the South American Pacific coast. From 1834-1841 he produced and published detailed works about sea navigation & is Journeys
Why did they sail the ocean? To explore the Southern Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean, which were areas becoming important to American traders and whalers.
How did they sail?
Their best know ship was the H.M.S Beagle and the Challenger

They sailed around the earth and discorvered 715 new gener, 4,717 new spiecies, took the first sounding more than 4,000 meters deep, captured biological samples in mid water, discovered marines organisms in the deepesr parts of the ocean, sampled and illustrated planket and other habitats and depths that haven't yet been studied.

Christopher Columbus- In 1492, Portuguese Christopher Columbus (1469-1524) set out on the first of his four voyages. His purpose was to find a route to Asia and the East Indies. He believed he’d reached Asia when he landed on a Caribbean Island. Like all Europeans, the existence of the Americas was unknown to him.
Amerigo Vespucci- Sailing on behalf of Portugal and Spain, Italian Amerigo Vespucci (1454-1512) voyaged to South America several times. He explored much of its east coast and the mouth of the Amazon River. Vespucci is credited as the first European to recognize that South America was a new continent. A world map produced in 1507 honored Vespucci’s discoveries by labeling the New World “America.”
Vasco Nunez de Balboa- In the early 1500s, Vasco Nunez de Balboa led an expedition that crossed the Isthmus of Panama in Central America and discovered the Pacific Ocean on the other side. Balboa became the first European to sail in the Pacific.
Ferdinand Magellan- Ferdinand Magellan, in 1519, wanted to establish a trade route to the east. Magellan’s trip was financed by Spain and began with five ships and about 260 men. Only a single ship and 18 men made it back in 1522. The rest died en route from disease and accidents. Magellan himself perished in the Philippines in a fight with islanders. The number of deaths and the stories of hardships discouraged anyone form trying to sail around the world again.
Sir Francis Drake- In 1577, Francis Drake left England on an expedition to the New World. His purpose was to raid Spanish ships and settlements for their treasure. His expedition rounded the southern tip of South America. He successfully raided Spanish territory along the west coast of South America. Loaded with treasure and knowing the Spanish would be waiting for him in the Atlantic, Drake decided to make for home by going westward. When he returned to London in 1580, Queen Elizabeth knighted him for his cargo which was worth a fortune. This was the second successful circumnavigation of the world.

1.Why did they sail the ocean? They sailed the ocean because: They traveled for trade, for adventure, communication, and in turn advanced math and sciences. Pg 2-8, 2-9
2. How did they sail? How they sailed: they originally sailed by stay near shore called piloting and then as mathematics and culture got more advanced they used and invented maps and longitude and latitude pg 2-9, 2-10
3. Who sailed? Strabo and Ptolemy sailed.
4. What did they find or accomplish by sailing? What they found was geographic maps and maps that showed the Earth as a sphere on a flat piece of paper.
5. What did they contribute to the tecnology or methods of sailing?They contributed to understanding the ocean in many ways. Pytheas predicted that tides in the Atlantic are based on the phases of the moon. Eratosthenes calculated Earth’s circumference and invented the first latitude/longitude system. Hipparchus invented the regular grid system that we use today.
