Converting Fractions to Percents
Solving Percent Problems
When shopping, it is often useful to be able to calculate a percent to find the total price after tax or how much you are saving from a sale.
Because percent means "per 100", you can try to convert the fraction to ?/100 form.
Follow these steps:
Step 1: Find a number you can multiply the bottom of the fraction by to get 100.
Step 2: Multiply both top and bottom of the fraction by that number.
Step 3. Then write down just the top number with the "%" sign.
How do you convert a fraction to a
percent if the denominator is not a
factor of 100?
ex. 5/8
2/6
A pair of shoes cost $140
There is a 12% tax.
What is the total cost?
