Do you know what a comet is?

no

Well it is a burning body of rock, gas, and ice with a burning gas tail.

A burning gas tail? What in the world is that?

Not in the world in outer space! comets have an elliptical orbit around the sun, The ice sublimates when it nears the sun, causing a "tail" of burning gas bihind the comet.

Sublimate?

Sublimate means to go directly from a solid to a gas skipping the liquid stage.

Oh

Okay I see, but I'm am having a little trouble visualizing this, can you give me a picture?

I'll do better than that I will give you a detailed diagram.

Oh really? thanks you're so considerate

Not really the diagram is part of the assignment.

Well thier you have it a detailed diagram

And now some measurements.

The Nucleus/head is about 10-20 km long

The comets coma is about 50 km

The comets white and blue gas tail is about 62 million miles.

Oh yeah and I almost forgot, comets are named after the person who studies them.

What about comet Temel-Tuttle, it has 2 names?

Well Tempel-Tuttle was discoverd by Enest Tempel, in 1865, but had not been proven a comet, untill later when is was studied Horace Tuttle in 1866 it then had been proven a real comet. Because 2 people were eligable for the name they named it Tempel-Tuttle.

Wow that was a mouthful, did you know that Tempel Tuttle is a short period comet?

What do you mean short period?

As I said before comets orbit the sun, if the orbit is more than 200 years then it is a long period comet, under 200 years, then it is a short period. In the case of Tempel-Tuttle's orbit it is 33.5 years.

Now you know enough about Tempel-Tuttle, and comets in genarall to make your own...

Comets are NOT shooting stars, shooting stars are meteors that have entered the atmostphear that burn up in a few seconds. Comets on the other hand can be viewed for weekis before they go out of sight, they are also huge! you may miss a shooting star cross the sky, but if you saw a comet you woulds spot it right away.

Bonus information

The magnatude of a comet is the brightness of the comet. The eccentricity a comet is how oliptical it's orbit is. And last but not least.

Really? Thanks you are so considerate!
