Limitations of Functionalism

Functionalism isn't as effective to look at society as everyone deviates from the norm in some way.

Functionalism is based on giving the parts of society roles to keep everything stable. It also looks at society in a macro scale and doesn't look at people individually.

A group cannot stray from the path other wise other roles that rely on that group cant function properly making society unstable.

Functionalism: Human Body View

Strengths of Functionalism

Another example to look at Functionalism is to look at it like a human body. Each part in the body needs other parts to keep everything working and stable.

The Brain sends messages to every working part in the body. The Heart pump blood and oxygen to the Brain and other parts. The rest of your body parts in The Body need the messages from you Brain and blood and oxygen from your Heart to keep things stable and working healthily.

Some of the strengths of Functionalism include;

It is a macro (large) view on society

If a person in society benefits from the Functionalism then other people will benefit from that.

Society tends to seek stability and avoid conflict as it is classed at dysfunctional.

Emile Durkheim

Emile Durkheim was a French sociologist, social psychologist and philosopher. Most of Durkheim's work was about how societies could keep the integrity and consistency in modernity. An era in which traditional social and religious ties are no longer assumed, and in which new social institutions have come into being. His first major sociological work was 'The Division Of Labour In Society". In 1895 he published "The Rules Of Sociological Method" and set up the first Eurpoean department of sociology becoming France's first professor of sociology.

What is Functionalism?

Functionalism is the view of society, natural system of order, stability and productivity. Society needs certain functions and tasks to keep it stable. Example: Families rely on Schools to educate their children, Schools rely on the Government to produce funding to keep children educated and have the equipment to help and Governments rely on the Schools to educate children to turn them into law-abiding adults and pay tax, vote etc.

Another way to look at Functionalism is like a human body. Each part relies on the other parts to contribute and make everything work.

Schools help educate children to become law-abiding adults.
