What was the Paxton Boys Massacre?

  • The Paxton Boys Massacre was group of village men who went and raided the small settlement of the Conestoga Indians. They were a vigilante* group of men that thought that the Indians needed to be punished even though the Indians never did anything. During the attack 6 Indians were killed, 14 taken under captivity and the prisoners were murdered several weeks later. Another name for this event is the Conestoga Massacre.

What caused the massacre?

  • During this time tough Scots-Irish immigrants populated the village of Paxton. They had gotten sick of the ways things were going and the deny for them to be apart of the colonial legislators. Scots-Irish people were put down as a lower rank compared to the En. They didn't think the legislators were listening, nor did they care. So they decided to take matters into their own hands, and go and attack the neighboring Conestoga Indians. They wasn't really a need for the attack, but the group of men could never be sure if an Indian would wonder into the village if they were planning on trading or attacking.
