Ed's father was a drunk who did nothing with his life and ended up drinking himself to death. The irony in this book is that Ed was doing Nothing with his life and probably would have spent the rest of his day playing cards with Marv and driving a stinky old cab for the rest of his life. So without the cards Ed wouldn't have found out who he really is and would've lived a life much like his fathers.
Foreshadowing is used a lot between Audrey
and Ed. The book explains how they just friends but Ed has a huge crush on her and whenever Audrey needs to talk to anyone you get the feeling she will fall in love with Ed. Audrey says she loves Ed but doesn't want to be with him. One day I think they will be together.
each of the cards ed received had symbolism. For example the ace of hearts was the last card he received and the names on the card were those who were closest to him in his life. each ace had its own meaning. There were also small parts of symbolism throughout the book. For example this girl runs every morning in bare feet but when she goes to the track meets on Saturday's she uses shoes and Ed goes to here house to deliver a empty shoe box to her and at the next track meet she runs in bare feet.
