The Interview

I interviewed Sammi Green, a survivor of the explosion. She said, "When Mount Shasta erupted, there was chaos. First, I heard a big explosion. Then I started to smell something like rotten eggs which was the burning sulfur and I saw lava and ash slowly coming down the side of the volcano. Dust and dirt drifted into my mouth and eyes. People were screaming and running around and trees and huts were crashing down everywhere."

Safety Plan

The Gorda Plate

Mount Shasta is in Siskiyou County, California. It is a stratovolcano with a VEI of 5. VEI stands for Volcanic Explosivity Index. The most recent eruption was in 1786. When it erupted, there was a big explosion and people were evacuated. Huts and other indian homes were destroyed and trees and plants were knocked down. Most people there were injured and some were killed. It took about 100 dollars to repair things.

Mount Shasta was made by the Gorda Plate. When the Kula plate subducted under it, the Gorda plate rose up forming Mount Shasta. The Gorda plate and the Kula plate make a convergent plate boundary. Mount Shasta erupted when all of the pressure built up inside of the volcano was released. It could not hold back the magma anymore.

I think that each family should have a safety kit that has special masks in it that keeps the ash and dirt out of your eyes, nose, and mouth. I also think that as much people as possible should be evacuated until most damage is repaired.

Volcanic Explosivity Index

Scientists measure the VEI of a volcano by measuring the volume of ejecta, height of eruption column, and the type of eruption of a volcano. Then scientists will know the VEI of a volcano.
