The Symbolist Movement

From Realism to Symbolism

  • Realism focused on portraying everyday activities as accurately as possible
  • In response to this concrete representation brought on by realism, symbolism sought to idealize fantasy & imagination.

What was Happening in the World

Characteristics

  • Artists used symbols to express their artificial world based on their imagination and emotions
  • By expressing themselves the artists would give their subjects mythological or esoteric meanings.
  • Second Industrial Revolution, which caused an economic boom in Western countries
  • Technological advances, such as the invention of Coca Cola, the dishwasher, etc.
  • This denoted the rise of convenience and materialism

Displacement

Openness

Realist style is representational, Symbolist style is presentational

Arbitrary

  • our ability to understand that a certain symbol means a certain thing
  • our ability to create and use symbols as we see fit
  • meaning is a construction of the human mind
  • a symbol has no direct connection with the object it refers too
