Ancient Greek Mythology

Pourquoi stories

Poseidon had a niece named Athena. One day, they both wanted to be the patron of this village. But, only one god could be the patron of this (soon to be) polis. Poseidon challenged Athena to a competition; whoever gave this village the better gift would win. Poseidon gave the village a nearby stream. The people celebrated, and ran out to drink the water. They coughed and retched upon drinking it. It was saltwater. Athena made an olive tree appear before them. They ran out again, and ate the olives, and they were delicious. Even though they appreciated Athena's gift more, they townspeople couldn't risk angering the sea lord. But Poseidon goodheartedly made a decision. He agreed that Athena had won. To thank her, this small village named themselves

Athens.

The reason for the Seasons

  • Hades saw Persephone & fell in love. He kidnapped her, she ate 6 pomegranate seeds that showed months she would stay.Demeter kills crops in winter/blooms flowers for her in spring

Prometheus got in trouble w/ Zeus so Zeus chained him to a rock. Prometheus had a brother named Epimetheus who was lonely. He asked Hephaestus to make a daughter out of clay, and he named her Pandora. Epimetheus knew Zeus was tricking him, but fell in love. Zeus gave Pandora to him and they got married. As a wedding gift, Zeus gave them a jar or a box. On the front said the words, "Do not Open". For a while they avoided it, but one day Pandora opened the box out of curiosity. Out came all of the bad things in life. For example, sickness, death, hate, disease, envy. Epimetheus ran towards Pandora and she showed him the empty box. At that moment, a tiny bug came out. It was named Hope. Hope saved the world from despair.
