PBIS and SWPBIS

PBIS

Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports

Description

  • PBIS is a system used to manage behavior and create positive goals for students.
  • PBIS encourages a unique approach rather than a change in curriculum to encourage good behavior.

Core Principles

  • Gives rewards for good behavior
  • Success is based on student outcome
  • Teaches students a variety of life skills such as organization, time management, and respect- PBIS can be tailored to encourage any behavior

Differences from Traditional Principles

PBIS creates a reward system for good behavior rather than redirecting attention or yelling at students (Watch the video below to see a teacher training video from the 50s). It also creates clear expectations and guidelines and a positive atmosphere in which students are happy to learn. Previous techniques encouraged having control over the classroom through threatening, intimidation and humiliation. Teachers would also punish students as a group and eagerly dole out punishments instead of rewards

Examples

  • Praising students for being on time
  • Praising students for staying on task
  • Praising students for being quiet

Using a clip chart or making a fun video helps everyone be aware of PBIS

In a high school setting, effective methods include praising students for being on task and focus and giving them chances to opt-out of homework or go on field trips.

SWPBIS

School-Wide Positive Behavior Interventions and Support

Core Principles

Examples

PBIS focuses on behaviors in the class while SWPBIS focuses on behaviors to and from class, to the cafeteria, or to the bathroom.

  • Similar to PBIS, SWPBIS can be tailored to fit the needs of any school and should encourage good behaviors
  • Pick a few rules that are easy to remember and can be applied to all classes
  • Staff members needs to be consistent

simple posters are a great way to communicate the expectations of all of the students

Similar with PBIS, you can make a fun video that applies to your grade/school

Similar techniques can apply to high school students, but it is important to make the content suitable for their age group. The video in this section will be too childish for high schoolers, but a video referencing popular tv shows or music would grab their attention.

Description

SWPIBS is applying PBIS to an entire school or district. The underlying theme is teaching behavioral expectations in the same manner as any core curriculum subject
