One of the most dominant themes in The Outsiders is that of class conflict. The beginning of the novel strongly introduces this theme as a group of Socs, the West Side rich kids, jump and terrorize Ponyboy, a young boy from the East Side: "Hey, grease," one said in an over-friendly voice.

When pony and Johnny were in the church bored so pony said this poem;
"Nature's first green in gold,
Her hardest hue to hold.
Her early leaf's a flower;
But only so an hour.
Then leaf subsides to leaf.
So Eden sank to grief,
So dawn goes down to day.
Nothing gold can stay."
And they both didn't know what it meant before until Johnny figured it out before he died. He said it meant, you gold when your a kid, like green, when your a kid everything is new, dawn, its just, when you get used to everything its day. And that's what the poem means

The setting of the story takes place in a large, unnamed town. Some say it is set in Tulsa, Oklahoma, because this where the author lived when she wrote the story. It is about a group of boys who are in a gang called The Greasers. And the soc's live in the same place just in another neighborhood.
