What Is It?

Used to be called "shell shock" or "battle fatigue syndrome," PTSD is a serious condition that can develop after a person has experienced or witnessed a traumatic or terrifying event in which serious physical harm occured or was threatened.

- Reliving: People with PTSD repeatedly relive the traumatic event with thoughts and memories of the trauma. These include flashbacks, hallucinations, and nightmares.

- Avoiding: The person may avoid people, places, thoughts, or situations that remind them of the trauma. This leads to feelings of detachment and isolation from family, friends and activities.

- Increased Arousal: These include excessive emotions; including feeling or showing affection; difficulty falling or staying asleep; irritability; outbursts of anger; difficulty concentrating; and being "jumpy" or easily startled.

  • Medications: Serotonergic antidepressants like Prozac, Zoloff and Paxil and to decrease physical symptoms include MInipress, Catapres, Tenex and Propranol
  • Therapy: psychotherapy, cognitive behavioral therapy
