Edward Hopper was born in 1882 and began drawing and painting at a young age. In 1900, he enrolled at the New York School of Art where he learned from Robert Henri. Hopper is known as an important contributor to the Realism movement. After his education, he illustrated for advertising agencies and became an instructor.

From 1906 to 1910, Hopper lived in Paris and was inspired by the Impressionistic art. He implemented Impressionism into his American Realist style with lighter colors and quicker strokes.

In 1923, Edward Hopper married an old classmate, Josephine Nivision. She was very supportive of his art and even encouraged him to try watercolors. As a married couple, they visited Cape Cod for many summers, which inspired Hopper's watercolors.
