The Columbian Exchange was the widespread exchange of animals, plants, culture, human populations, communicable diseases, technology and ideas between the New and Old World, following the voyage to the Americas by Christopher Columbus in 1492, colonization and trade by Europeans in the Americas, and institution of the slave trade in Africa and the Americas. This impacted the social and cultural makeup of both sides of the Atlantic.

  • Food choices expanded world wide
  • European culture changed
  • 600-900 AD: Almond trees were flourishing in areas such as Spain, Morocco, Greece, and Israel. So it was only natural for explorers to consume them while traveling the Silk Road between the Mediterranean region and China

One of the items that were exchanged were:

Almonds

Columbian Exchange Project

Although a California product today, the cultivated almond traces its origins to the deserts and lower mountain slopes of central and southwest Asia.

As almonds traveled with humans, they took root wherever they fell. Seedling populations appeared along the trade routes and near ancient cities,

Nomads created a trail mix of ground almonds, chopped dates, bits of pistachios, sesame oil and bread crumbs. Rolled into little balls, the mixture sustained them on long journeys.

This item originated in the Middle East and South Asia.

The almond is a species of tree native to the Middle East and South Asia. "Almond" is also the name of the edible and widely cultivated seed of this tree. Especially Syria, Israel, Turkey and Pakistan. Since ancient times, people have cultivated the almond tree for its seeds or nuts.
