The function of carbohydrate on the body....

  • Gives the body energy...

  • Helps the body get rid of waste products and keeps us regular!

  • Part of a balanced diet

By the end of today's lesson I will be able to...

  • Successfully identify foods which are rich in carbohydrate.
  • Show an understanding of the function of carbohydrates in the diet.
  • Explain the difference between a starch and a sugar when providing energy.
  • Explain the consequences of eating too many/not enough carbohydrates.

Carbohydrates are broken down during digestion and turned into Glucose, which is used for energy. If the glucose is not used it is stored as body fat.

Good sources of carbohydrate include:

These are good carbs :) as they take longer to digest so release energy slowly!

  • Cereal
  • Grains and rice
  • Bananas
  • Bread
  • Pasta
  • Potatoes

Added sugar has no nutritional value other than providing a quick source of energy...often called 'empty calories' or 'quick fix' energy
