Homeric conventions:

  • Epic Simile- Homer describes Skylla as a fisherman waiting on a rock. He uses a simile to express this and continues by comparing men to fish.

Literary Elements

Characters:

  • Odysseus- The protagonist of the Odyssey. Fought in the Trojan war. Father of Telemachus and husband of Penelope
  • The Sirens-enchantresses of the sea, whose song can tempt a sailor to his ruin
  • Skylla- a man-eating monster that lives in a Cliffside cavern opposite the whirlpool of Karybdis
  • Karybdis-monster in the form of a giant whirlpool, located across from Skylla

Themes:

  • The virtue of loyalty- despite the horrors of the Land of the Dead and the relief of escape, Odysseus' first thought is to return to Aeaea to burry Elpenor's corps.
  • Ultimate Leadership- Odysseus knows getting past Skylla and Karybdis will be difficult. He needs to use proper judgement and he needs to realize even if things go well he will still lose six good men
  • Test of Judgement- Odysseus needs to decide if he should stop at the island of Thrinacia. He wants to pass it because of Tiresias ' prophecy but his men want to stop because they are tired and hungry. Odysseus' judgement is tested when he gives into his men

What are Skylla and Karybdis?

-Skylla is a six headed monster. Karybdis is a giant whirlpool moster.

How do the Sirens destroy men, and how do Odysseus and his men avoid destruction?

-The Sirens lure men to their island with their beautiful enchanted singing. The men either drown trying to get there, or washed away on the rocks listening to them. Odysseus plugs all his men's ears with wax and ties himself to the mast so he can hear their singing.

What happens to Odysseus?

-Odysseus, following Teiresias advice, stays on the side of the ship closest to Scylla and she misses him, keeping him safe.

What happens to Odysseus' companions?

-Six of Odysseus' men are eaten by Skylla and their ship and the remaining men are sucked down by Karybdis, destroying them.
