Igbo Funeral Rituals

The 1st Burial

The Wake

  • For mourning

  • "Men buried with tools, guns or hunting gear and women with pots and dishes"(Ifie).

  • Immediate family members may dress the same
  • The community is welcomed to the home with kola nuts and palm wine.

  • Prayers are spoken

  • Gunshots are fired the next morning

"Ikwa ozu"

"'Ikwa ozu' means 'celebrating the dead' and is also referred to as the second burial"(Nwaubani).

"Ikwa ozu" is more expensive and lavish.

This ceremony is held after many weeks to a year and lasts

for different amounts of time.

If a family does not organize an "ikwa ozu" they will be tormented and not obtain any titles or positions.

Preparation

(Nwaubani).

  • The body is scrubbed with camwood dye

  • Placed on plantain leaves

  • Men are placed with their feet facing the entryway

  • Woman are carried to their husbands village

The Purpose

In the Igbo culture, live does not end after death.

The ceremonies performed ensure a safe passage to the spirit world.
