During the earliest uprising, nearly 10,000 people were killed most of them being civilians that weren't even a part of the rebellion. (the uprising that happened when Hassad was in office)
As of March in 2012 it is to be believed that at least 8,000 have died because of this and conflict and 250,000 have fled their homes to get away from it.
Many civilians fled to neighboring countries such as Lebanon and Turkey to seek peace, yet the war followed them there. Assad forces were soon traveling over to Lebanon also to seek out the ones who escaped.
The rebels proceeded to grow and gain control over the lands. They even started recruiting parts of the Syrian Army to help their cause.
Syria has been a dictatorship, under the Assad family, since 1970. Hafez and his son, Bashar, (the two most recent dictators) both ruled the people with terror and force to remain in power.
There was an earlier uprising in Syria during 1982. The elder Assad Kept this under control by allowing the Syrian army attack the rebels. This ended up killing around 10,000 people, mostly innocent civilians
During March of 2011, as a part of the "Arab Spring" rebellions began throughout the Middle East.
Since this war is still occurring obviously no ones going to give in any time soon so the Syrian Army has called in some recruits including some troops from Hezbollah, Revolutionary Guards from Iran, and people from the Shia Muslim world.
