To conjugate the present simple use the infinitive for subjects "I", "you", "we" and "they" and another for "he", "she" and "it", we added a "s" to end of the verb.

Affirmative Sentences

Subject + main verb.

Examples:

  • I talk. (Yo hablo.)
  • He eats. (Él come.)
  • They learn. (Ellos aprenden.)

Negative Sentences

Subject + auxiliary verb ("to do") + auxiliary negative ("not") + main verb.

Examples:

  • I do not [don't] talk. (Yo no hablo.)
  • He does not [doesn't] eat. (Él no come.)
  • They do not [don't] learn. (Ellos no aprenden.)

Interrogative Sentences

Auxiliary verb ("to do") + subject + main verb+?

Example:

  • Do you talk? (¿Hablas tú?)
  • Does he eat? (¿Come él?)
  • Do they learn? (¿Aprenden ellos?)

Adverbs of time

Always (siempre),

Every day (cada día),

Usually (normalmente),

Often (a menudo),

Sometimes (a veces),

Rarely (raramente),

Hardly ever (casi nunca),

Never (nunca)...

Examples:

  • I always talk to my mother on Sundays. (Siempre hablo con mi madre los domingos.)
  • He never eats vegetables.

(Nunca come las verduras.)

Time expressions such as "now", "right now" and "at the moment" indicate the present continuous.

Examples:

  • I'm studying now. (Estoy estudiando ahora.)
  • PlayHe's eating at the moment. (Está comiendo en este momento.)
  • PlayIs it raining? (¿Está lloviendo?)

We use the present continuous to talk about something that is already decided to be made in the near future.

Examples:

  • I'm going to the party tonight. (Voy a la fiesta esta noche.)
  • He's not [He isn't] coming to class tomorrow. (No viene a la clase manaña.)
  • Are you working next week? (¿Trabajas la semana que viene?)

Present Progressive

This verb form is often used to describe situations that we have before our eyes and we know that adults develop as we speak.

-Affirmative sentences

It is a verbal form consisting of the auxiliary TO BE conjugated according to the subject of the sentence, and the present participle form of the main verb (V + ing).

  • I am reading the newspaper.
  • He is having a shower.
  • We are playing tennis.

-Negative sentences

The negative form of the Present Progressive is the negative form of the verb TO BE accompanied by the present participle of the main verb.(Not+ V + ing)

I’m not reading the newspaper.

He isn’t having a shower.

We aren’t playing tennis.

Interrogative Sentences

The Present Progressive contains the verb TO BE as an assistant, the interrogative form is obtained by reversing the order of the auxiliary and the subject.

Are you reading the newspaper?

Is he having a shower?

Are they playing tennins?
