The First Gulf War Timeline

January 30th and February 1rst 1991

January 6th & 18th 1991

August 2nd-August 28th 1990

In August 1990, Prime Minister Brian Mulroney committed the Canadian Forces to deploy a Naval Task Group. The Canadian forces escorted hospital ships, & provided medical help. The Canadian air force also took part in bombing missions.

January 6th- First U.S. government statement of Operation Desert Storm made.

January 18th- Iraq launched SCUD missiles on Israel. The U.S. deploys Patriot missiles to Israel and Saudi Arabia.

January 30th- 11 U.S. Marines in LAV's were killed in friendly fire incident by Air Force A-10 aircraft near town of Al Khafji while they were attacking a company of Iraqi tanks.

February 1rst- Iraqi forces were driven out of Saudi Arabia

On August 2nd, about 100,000 Iraqi troops invaded Kuwait, initiating the Gulf War. On August 4th, Kuwait was under Iraqi control after Saddam Hussein declared a victory over Kuwait. On August 8th, Saddam Hussein proclaimed the annexation of Kuwait. On August 28th, Iraq declared Kuwait as its 19th province and renames Kuwait City as al-Kadhima.

September 14th 1990

United Kingdom and France announce the deployment of troops to Saudi Arabia.

January 22nd- Iraqi troops began blowing up Kuwaiti oil wells.

January 25th- Iraqi troops dumped millions of gallons of crude oil into the Persian Gulf.

February 26th- Saddam Hussein ordered the Iraqi withdrawal from Kuwait. About 10,000 retreating Iraqi troops were killed when Coalition aircraft bombed their stolen civilian and military vehicles.

February 28th- Iraq was pushed out of Kuwait, and the war ended.
