The 5 Hypotheses

  • Acquisition/Learning
  • Natural Order
  • Monitor
  • Input
  • Affective Filter

Acquisition/ Learning Hypothesis

This hypothesis defines acquisition in opposition to learning. Acquisition is a process of acquiring something subconsciously by exposure to models, a process of trial and error, and practice within social groups, without formal teaching (Gee, 1992). Learning is a conscious process in which we focus on various aspects of the language itself (Freeman & Freeman, 2011)

The processes of acquisition and learning develop different skill sets that inevitably complement one another.

Natural Order Hypothesis

Although the actual rate of acquisition occurs at varying intervals for each learner, this hypothesis states that there is a natural order in which phonemes, morphemes, syntax, and so on will be acquired (Freeman & Freeman, 2011).

Monitor Hypothesis

The monitor hypothesis focuses on the relationship between the functions of acquisition and learning. Acquisition provides a learner with the tools to produce a language; whereas, learning provides the learner with rules to govern their output during any given context (Freeman & Freeman, 2011)

Input Hypothesis

Central to Krashen's Monitor Model, the Input Hypothesis states that people acquire language solely through comprehensible input. Although it may lead to cognitive gains, especially in content area learning, learners need not produce language (output) to learn it (Freeman & Freeman, 2011).

Affective Filter Hypothesis

Despite the presence of comprehensible input, learners will not acquire language if affective factors, such as boredom or anxiety, prevent the input from reaching the parts of the brain where acquisition occurs (Freeman & Freeman, 2011).
