Surveys

From this information, it is possible to deduce that Melbourne is considered a safe city by the public but they still believe it has its safety problems. The police presence is thought to be adequate, however Melbournians believe that Police Presence is necessary to maintain a safe environment. With half of the people surveyed reporting they had felt unsafe at least once in the CBD it is evident that there is still an issue.

For and Against.

Observations

Us students had the privilege to observe different cases and actions taking place in the Melbourne Magistrates Court. Unfortunately, a few of the members who had been accused in court were people in society who may have been brought up on quite low financial means, who may not have had a supportive family, and who may not have had access to an adequate education to set them up for adulthood. People as such are likely to be involved in crime, making Melbourne a less safe place. The Melbourne Magistrate's Court punishes people adequately for breaking the law, in an attempt to make Melbourne a much safer place.

Vomit stains have appeared on corners near nightclubs. This is a result of people, mostly teens who overdose on drugs and alcohol. While people are becoming sick and vomiting against walls, this leads them into a vulnerable position for predators to attack and do harmful things, subsequently making Melbourne an unsafe and dangerous place at night. There are public strip clubs and nightclubs all over Kings street. The amount of alcohol and drugs consumed in the moonlit lanes of Melbourne is simply obsense, which is an obvious safety issue.

Another location where we went to observe safety in the CBD was in Flinders Street. Flinders street is one of the busiest streets in Melbourne. We were surprised with the lack of police officers. Recently gangs have terrorised Flinders street at night. They ravaged through the Flinders and Swanston intersection. Many bystanders were injured. We think that although Flinders street is very busy and has a small presence of police we think that Flinders street is quite safe in the day but wouldn’t be so safe in the night.

The cameras are put in place to ensure that everyone is kept safe whilst on the streets and if there is an incident, it will capture the evidence. Everyone has the right to feel and be safe on the streets of the CBD. Whilst everyday pedestrians are walking the streets, there are police officers monitoring the area. The police in the city are looking out for trouble makers, criminals, drug addicts and thieves. Thanks to the police cameras, there is evidence beyond eye witness to be used against criminals. In addition, police on foot and in vehicles patrolling the streets of the CBD are what keep us safe.

Our final thoughts are that Melbourne is a generally safe city, but it has unsafe facets. Melbourne is a city which offers a fantastic and strong infrastructure. It is home to many people’s businesses and work. The city has a very safe and sophisticated facade, but on the inside the laneways and hidden places make up a dangerous and dodgy Melbourne. In conclusion, we believe that large numbers of police are needed in order to create a safe and secure Melbourne.

We believe that safety in the CBD will only get worse in the future. As the population grows the crime rate will only increase and also the recent increase of migrants entering Melbourne could potentially make the crime rate skyrocket. We think that Melbourne will be still regarded one of the most safe cities and the most liveable city in the future as other cities around the world will become a lot more unsafe so Melbourne will be regarded as safe compared to other cities in the world. One worrying problem is the fact that crime will only get a lot worse. We believe that Melbourne is quite prone to terrorist attacks and we believe that Melbourne could even become as unsafe as a place like Israel in the future.

Safety in Melbourne

Do you feel there is enough Police Presence to make you feel safe?

Is Melbourne a Safe City?

Have you ever felt unsafe?

Is the Government Doing Enough for Safety in the CBD?

Brief Analysis Summary

Interview: Policewoman Diane

From the interview with Policewoman Diane, we learnt that Melbourne is generally a safe city but, it has some unsafe aspects. According to Policewoman Diane, the most dangerous time to be in the city is at night on the weekend. This time is most dangerous because at this time there is obviously a lack of light and more people are consuming drugs and alcohol. Although the daytime is less dangerous, robberies, theft, and assaults still occur at this time of day. According to Policewoman Diane, theft from cars is the most common criminal act throughout the day.

Literature Research: Media

The media's perspective on Melbourne's safety is very negative. The media highlights events of homicide, theft and violence, hence the famous quote "No news is good news". As I was casually searching the web for information, I came across a mind-blowing statistic: about 10,670 violent crimes were committed in the CBD over the past five years, and recently police numbers have dropped. Overall, the media believes Safety in Melbourne has a long way to go.

Literature Research: Government

The state government of Melbourne attempts to ensure safety for all people. In the city there is a 24 hour police station and many officers on patrol. Despite this, at night crime still remains prominent. Without large numbers of police, crime would increase out of control and Melbourne would spiral into disarray. The government is always trying to make the CBD a safe place through increase in surveillance and police presence, yet crime still remains.

Despite the governments efforts, using education and harsher justice system, Large police presence is necessary to stop crime.

Initial Thoughts

Literature Research: Crime Rates

There was quite a contrast to the group members' initial thoughts, with Reuben believing that Melbourne is a safe city and does not require a strong police presence while all other group members believed the opposite: that Melbourne isn't all of safe and that a strong police presence is imperative.

The crime rate in Melbourne is 34.04 which is ranked low on the crime rate scale. Although there is a fair amount of crime in Melbourne it is very little compared to other cities and countries. The scary thing is that the crime rate will only rise in the future as the bigger the population the more the crime and the recent increase of migrants coming into the country could potentially make Melbourne an unsafe city and could make the crime rate skyrocket. We believe the reason that the crime rate is low is because Melbourne/Australia’s population is tiny compared to other cities in the world. The crime rate could be a real problem in the future.
