Alice in Wonderland references

Props

Cupcake

We wanted to play on the idea of the 'eat me' and 'drink me' iconography within Alice in Wonderland, shown in the two pictures below. To do this we used cupcake which Naomi (the lead singer) would eat before she was taken into a world of her imagination. In hindsight, perhaps we should have used a 'eat me' label to make this section of the narrative a bit clearer.

Why we chose Alice in Wonderland.

Playing Cards

The Forest

We made the cards ourselves, and we hung them up from the rigging on the ceiling with clear wire; this made it look almost as if the cards were floating in front of the black back drop.

In Alice in Wonderland much of the film in set in a forest; we wanted to replicate this by filming our paint fight scene in the forest as well. This actually worked out well for us as we didn't have permission to film the paint fight scene inside the studio (for obvious reasons.) Due to timing and weather issues, we weren't able to go to the spot in the forest that we wanted to so instead we found a nearby field that had a small woodland patch and filmed in front of that to make it look more like a forest scene

After doing research into other music videos, we all agreed that we liked the idea of using intertextuality in our own music video. We thought that Alice in Wonderland would be a good choice as it would be a nostalgic text especially for people between the ages of 16-24, (our target audience.) Also, the connotations with drug use in our narrative, and in the Alice in Wonderland narrative could also be relatable for stereotypical fans of the dance music genre who attend raves and festivals. For these reasons, we hope that the video would appeal to our primary, secondary, and tertiary audiences.

Mushrooms

We all agreed that playing cards were some of the main iconography used in Alice in Wonderland. We decided to incorporate playing cards into the set design, we chose to make them especially large to reflect the part of the film where Alice shrinks.

Mushrooms are some of the most stand-out pieces of iconography in Alice in Wonderland and so we thought it would be a good idea to incorporate them into our set design. We looked online at party companies who sold giant mushroom props but they were far too expensive and so we painted the mushrooms ourselves and hung them up in the same way that we placed the playing cards.
