Mammalian Dive Reflex
Side Effects of the Mammalian Dive Reflex
Bradycardia
Facial Immersion Demo
- Response to facial submersion in cold water
- Heart rate slows between 10% to 50%
- Slower heart rate reduces need for oxygen
Spleen
- Spleen contracts and releases more red blood cells
- More red blood cells improve the amount of oxygen the body is able to take on
Immersion Diuresis
the need to pee which can lead to dehydration
Lactic Acid Build Up
can lead to cramps
Blood Shift
- Helps conserve oxygen
- Better handle pressure
- Improves freediving ability
Occurs when pressure at depth compresses the air space in the thoracic cavity
- Helps to compensate for pressure
- Help protect the lungs from barotrauma
