Where Is It Placed?

There is a separate part of a pyramid called the King's Chamber. That is where they put the sarcophagus and bury the pharaoh.

Sarcophagus

The Pharaoh Head

At first the sarcophagus was flat and plain so the Egyptians over time put a mask of a pharaoh over the top. It was mainly for decoration, but it was also a symbol that a very important pharaoh's body was laying there.

Why a Sarcophagus?

When a pharaoh dies he is buried with valuable things that they might need in the afterlife. If they use a sarcophagus then they are able to keep their precious objects with them. A sarcophagus also secures the body after the mummification process.

Mummification Process

  • The Egyptian mummification process is known as the embalming process.
  • First they wash the body with good smelling palm wine and rinse it with water from the Nile.
  • They remove any internal organs because that is the first part of the body to decompose.
  • The organs are washed and packed in natron except the heart because the heart stays in the body.
  • Then they pull the brain out through the nose.
  • The body is washed again after 40 days and then is covered in oils for the skin to stay elastic.
  • They wrap the organs in linen and put them inside the body.
  • Then the body is completly wrapped in linen.

Sarcophagus

- is a stone coffin, people believe that early limestone coffins had the properties to dissolve the body quickly.

The art on the outside changed over time but during the Middle Kingdom the coffin was decorated with fake doors, eyes, portraits, and bands of hieroglyphics.
