"You need not have success when trying,or any hope, to make it start." -The founder of The Netherlands
"Land Reclamation, is the process of creating new land from ocean, riverbeds, or lake beds." -Wikipedia
In the Netherlands, The Dutch reclaimed a part of the North Sea, and mainly transformed it, into a Transportation system.
Finally, after all the projects were done, there were positive outcomes. Firstly, there is a population density of 1000 people per squared kilometer, because there are many more jobs (industry, farm land, recreation, and additional urban expansions). To conclude, the water level is rising, and there are high chances of flooding happening again, but the Dutch are happy where they live. If a flood ever comes into their land again, the Dutch will expand on their project. All projects put together, resulted in an additional 1650 km squared, of extra land.
Before taking action for any project, the Dutch planned to make a barrier, held with dikes that measured 300ft thick, and 22 ft above sea level. While the engineers of The Netherlands were planning these actions, there were 498 people per square kilometer. These processes took place during the Dutch Golden Age (17th Century), but the project had still taken place. This project was made to prevent floods, set up a transportation system for water, and renew the salt water, with fresh water. After all of these steps were done, the project was complete.
During the 16th-17th centuries, the people who lived in The Netherlands, that time, (The Frisians) decided to make a barrier through the South Sea (Zuiderzee Bay), to prevent floods from reaching the land. Also when you reclaim land, you can turn it into use for transportation, recreation, agricultural and urban expansions. They made the barrier by land drainage, dikes, dunes, pipes and steam powered pumps. Sadly, the barrier collapsed a short period of time later.
Recently, land reclamation took place in the Netherlands because there were too many floods entering the land. This caused the Dutch to lose 1/3 (65%) of their land underwater. The more floods that entered the land caused more damage because of land drainage, natural disaster (sea level rise), and the land was covered by clay soil. (Made bumps for water to go higher)
During the 17th-19th Century, land reclamation took place in the Netherlands. The reason why reclamation took place in the Netherlands was because there were large floods going in to the land and people would use the extra land for transportation, recreation, agricultural, and urban expansion uses.
While the Dutch were working on their second project, they decided to set up a link between a city named Lelystad, and Amsterdam with a polder. A polder is " a piece of low-lying land reclaimed from the sea or a river and protected by dikes, especially in the Netherlands."
- Wikepedia.
This resulted in more transportation systems, and more habitat for the humans.
When the new people arrived in the Netherlands, (Dutch) they noticed that many floods had entered the land (sea level rised)in 1960, which ruined the old dikes. In 1891, the Dutch had informed an engineer from the water industry, who pledged an offer to make a barrier between The North Sea, and Wadden Sea. In 1986 the project was done, and has been successful to this day.
