- Phonetic glyphs-single consonant characters that function as an alphabet
- Logographs- symbols that represent a concept
- Determinatives- narrow the meaning of the first two categories
- Hieroglyphs was predominately used by royalty
- Became widespread among people when glyphs was simplified
- Resulted into two different forms priestly and popular
Beginnings
Logographs
- Egyptian hieroglyphics evolved from writing and art in Mesopotamia
- Started on wood and pottery
Relating to Chinese Calligraphy
- Early forms were both photographic
- Moved from royalty/upper class to whole population as it was simplified
Differences between the two
- Did not change drastically between rulers/dynasties
- Remained in photographic form
