Salvage the Bones by Jesmyn Ward

Does the Author deserve their acclaim?

Yes, Jesmyn Ward defeineltly deserved her Pulitzer award; She is extremely clever and knows how to catch her reader's attention through emotions and realistic situations. I gained strong connections with the characters which helped me understand the novel on a deeper level.

Diction/Syntax

Significance of Author's Style

Past:

  • Ward uses lots of informal diction due to the fact that the narrator of the story is a poorly educated 15 year old girl named Esch.
  • "Southern Talk."
  • Vulgar/Explicit

  • Sentences tend to be short and simple but when the narrator describes her feelings or other characters, the sentences are very long and descriptive.

"If anything hit us this Summer, it's going to be blow down a few branches. News don't know what they talkin about." Manny had black curly hair, black eyes, and white teeth, and his skin was the color of fresh-cut wood at the heart of a pine tree.

Figures of Speech

I never payed attention to diction or symbolism, and I never realized the importance of syntax or the significance of it.

Ward word choice is very unique when describing situations or wanting to create vivid images. Ward also narrates the novel through the eyes of a fifteen year old, the novel is only revolved around what Esch sees and feels on a daily basis. The author knows how to shape the events and details using lots of similes and metaphors.

Present:

I actually payed attention to figures of speech and symbolism, I also payed more attention to the plot and the way it was used to shape the story.

Symbolism: Skeetah's dog China symbolizes hope and loyalty.

Similes: Junior folds over his chest, his ribs like a small grill burnt black.

Imagery: Very vivid. Intense fighting scenes and sexual scenes are detailed and realistic. Ward actually makes you feel like you're in the novel.

Characterization

Setting

Plot

Themes

  • Bois Sauvage, Mississippi

  • Hurricane Katrina (2005)
  • Written within an 11 day period, a series of events occur that lead up to hurricane Katrina.

  • As you progress into the novel scenes and emotions increase on a deeper level.
  • Direct: mainly used to describe physical appearances of characters in the novel.

  • Indirect: is mainly used to describe the main character, Esch through her actions and thoughts.

"With Manny it was different; he was so beautiful, and still he chose me, again and again. He wanted my girl heart; and I gave him both of them. The pines seemed to circle like a ring-a-rosy, and I fell."

  • In order to succeed one must suffer.

Ward puts Esch and her siblings in many challenging situations, their actions based upon their challenges may either make or break them.

  • Always have hope.
