Stewardship is the feeling of being responsible for protecting something.
For example, the Lorax was a steward of the environment (more specifically the trees.) He showed stewardship by standing by them for protection no matter what.
An example of this in real life is someone like Amy Ho of WWF who is a steward of animals. She shows stewardship by saving endangered species and by convincing other people to become stewards as well.
Sustainablitity means our ability to save things for future generations.
An example of this from the movie is when the Once-ler made his Thneeds out of the Trufula trees without letting them grow back or planting new ones. This made his company and product very unsustainable.
An example of this in real life is a couple years ago I remember reading about global warming and thinking "so what? I'll be dead by then anyway." After learning of sustainability I realised how wrong I was.
I have already spoken quite a bit about ecological footprint in this presentation and that is because I think that it's one of the most important things that we've learned in this unit.
Ecological footprint is a system that measures the amount of land that you use for space, resources, food ect.
An example comparison would be that the Lorax has a much smaller ecological footprint that the Once-ler because he protected the environment and didn't polute it like the Once-ler did.
When I saw this movie, it really made me think about what we're doing to our environment. Although I've seen The Lorax before, our recent class discussions about economical footprint opened my eyes to what's really going on and how much my family and I are contributing to this world wide issue.
While watching this movie, I also thought a lot about the size of my economical footprint. Although it's certainly not as big as the Once-ler's, it's pretty significant and needs to be reduced.
Finally, near the very end of the movie this phrase was said, "Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothings going to get better, it's not." It really hit home for me and reminded me of all the times I've heard that one person can make a difference. I now know it's true.
"Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot nothings going to get better. It's not..."
To help reduce the ecological footprint of your Country, start with your own. Take less flights, use more public transit, eat less meat, or just go to www.statcan.gc.ca!
The Lorax begins when a man named the Once-ler travels to Thneedville, He quickly discovers a Trufula tree. "The touch of their tufts was much softer than silk and they had the sweet smell of fresh butterfly milk." The Once-ler then decides to use the tufts to make his multi-purpose Thneeds which everybody needs so, he cuts down a tree. As he goes into his trailor to knit the thneen, a small creature named the Lorax appears.
"I am the Lorax, I speak for the trees! and I would like a few words if you please." He declares to the Once-ler. He then explains that the once-ler can't cut down any more trees but he doesn't want to hear it. "You are crazy with greed!" the Lorax persists, but the Once-ler doesn't listen.
The Once-ler continues "biggering and biggering" his company until he is famous. The Lorax doesn't give up trying but it's a lost cause and eventually the Once-ler cuts down the last tree. The defeated Lorax lifts himself up With a "sad backward glance," and floated away through a hole in the smog. The only trace that he leaves is a small rock with the word "UNLESS" written on it.
In the end, this movie leaves you with hope that ThneedsVille's environment can be restored and leaves you wanting to do something about Your environment too.
