Frictional keratosis

Definition

Current treatment

Oral mucosa develops hyperplasia (white elevated layer) in places where it is exposed to repetitive friction.

Problems

There is no treatment that directly targets the actual friction, except maybe wearing a dental splint (bite guard) on both the upper and the lower arch at night. But the patient compliance is very low, mostly because people find the splints uncomfortable to sleep in.

  • hyperplasia on the mucosa (white thick line at the level of the occlusal plane)
  • indentations on the lateral sides of the tongue
  • maybe greater risk of developing oral cancer

Etiology

Solution?

Easy fix

Not easy fix

  • malformed dentures
  • sharp tooth edges
  • chronic cheek biting (morsicatio buccarum)
  • tongue thrusting
  • A flat barrier between the teeth and the tongue and buccal mucous membrane.
  • Stiff patches attached to the soft tissues to prevent them getting chewed on.
