Early Life

First husband was

Amory Oakes

She died at the age of 59 on February 1, 1868 in Vernon, Vermont

Second husband was Nathan T. Preston

Had a daughter named

Rachel Delight Oakes

Rachel Oakes Preston was born on March 2, 1809 in Vernon, Vermont. She married Amory Oakes, a fellow Methodist, and had a daughter named Rachel Delight. Soon after Rachel Delight was born, the Oakes family moved to Verona, New York. After arriving Amory fell ill and died soon after. Turning to the Bible for comfort and answers, she began to study the 10 commandments. She came to accept the 4th commandment, keep the Sabbath day Holy. Not long after that did Rachel convert to Seventh-Day Adventism and became one of our founding pioneers.

On her grave read,

“Rachel Preston was used

of God in bringing the truth of

the Sabbath to the Adventist church

in Washington, New Hampshire, which became the first Seventh-Day Adventist Church in America”.

Contributions

After converting to the Adventist faith, Rachel began to become more invested in the 10 commandments and what they truly meant. She moved to Washington, New Hampshire with her daughter who took a teaching position there. Rachel attended a service at the New Hampshire Church during communion where Mr. Wheeler preached about honoring the commandments. This was still during the time when not many people worshiped on the Sabbath yet, but Rachel did. She felt inclined to speak with Mr. Wheeler after the service about the commandments. She informed him that we cannot honor only a few of them and ignore the rest, including the Sabbath.

Later Life

Several years after Amory Oakes death, she married Nathan Preston and moved back to Vermont. Her daughter Delight converted to Adventism as well and became a dedicated school teacher in New Hampshire. Even in old age Rachel continually made sure the church acknowledged the commandments where as many other faiths did not, but she was not perfect. She still struggled with many of the beliefs of the Adventist faith, but eventually found harmony in her heart.
