U.S., Mexico, and Canada form NAFTA, the North American Free Trade Agreement.

Women gain franchise in Mexico.

Newly elected president in Guatemala. Jacobo Arbenz creates reforms such as the United Fruit Company.

Women gain the right to vote in Colombia.

The United States Forms the "School of the Americas."

The "School of the Americas" is a military school near the panama canal. Many of the students there will go on to stage coups in their countries.

Women gain franchise in Guatemala and Panama.

Most Countries of the Americas sign the Inter-American Treaty of Reciprocal Assistance in Rio de Janeiro.

Also known as the Rio treaty. All but Guinea, French Guinea, and Suriname sign the treaty. This treaty is known as a hemispheric defense doctrine, which states that if one nation is attacked, they all will fight for that one country.

Women gain the right to vote in Honduras, Peru, and Nicaragua.

Ayrton Senna Begins his Formula 1 Career

Ayrton Senna was one of the best formula 1 drivers of the 80's. Senna won the world championship in 1988, 1990, and 1991. Senna was a Brazilian race car driver and influential figure in Brazilian History.

83 Guatemalan prisoners die.

Unites States government scientists deliberately infect Guatemalan prisoners with syphilis and gonorrhea in order to test vaccines.

Woman gain the right to vote in El Salvador.

Females right to vote in Chile and Costa Rica.

Cuban Revolution

The Cuban Revolution was a time of turmoil in Cuba. In 1953 Fidel Castro and his brother Raul attacked the barracks at Moncada. Castro's promise of economic equality created a following until in 1959 the Cuban president had to flee the country. Fidel Castro imposed a communist regime.

Operation Condor

Operation Condor was a governmental operation in order to round up or kill all political enemies. Once Operation Condor was completed thousands were killed, and South Americans' trust in their leaders was forever tarnished.

On May 1st formula 1 driver Ayrton Senna dies in a fatal collision during the San Marino Grand Prix in Imola, Italy. Senna was a spiritual race car driver and revered not only by people of Latin American descent, but many other people.
