Which ingredients provide energy?

  • Sucrose, Glucose, Panax Ginseng root extract, L-Carnitine, Hydrochloride, Caffine, Taurine, Gurana, Pyrioxide HCL, Niacin, Panthothenic Acid.

Does your analysis substantiate the claim that this is an "energy drink"? If so, what molecules are the sources of energy?

Which ingredients contribute to body repair?

  • The more bonds they have the more energy the ingredients have.
  • Turns fat into usable energy
  • ATP is used to store or release the energy created depending on the cells needs.
  • Glucuronolacte , Cyanocobalamin, Riboflavin, Pyridoxine, Niancinamide
  • placed in energy drinks to help prevent glycogen depletion
  • important for growth, cell reproduction, blood formation and protein and tissue synthesis.
  • help maintain body function properly.

How are the ingredients in these drinks helpful to someone spending a lot of energy?

Due to the ingredients in Monster that provide energy or the production of ATP, this is an energy drink. The energy comes from caffeine, glucose, sucrose, and maltodextrin. All of these molecules provide energy by being converted into ATP.

Roles of molecules in Monster energy drink

In what ways might the one that does not have a metabolic energy source provide the perception of increased energy after consumption?

Caffeine, Glucose, Glucuronolactone, Inositol, Niacin, Pantothenic Acid, Pyridoxine HCL, Sucrose, and Taurine provide energy.

Pantothenic Acid and Pyridoxine HCL simulate your metabolism.

-Your metabolism burns calories which results in energy.

*These ingredients are helpful because they increase the amount of energy produced so that someone can maintain their stamina for longer periods of time.

Molecules and Ingredients in Coke

  • Glucose, sucrose, and maltodextrin all produce ATP
  • The B-Vitamins help maintain regular body functions
  • Taurine provides energy and improves athletic performance
  • Caffeine provides energy and increases heart rate
  • Guarana seed extract provides taste and energy
  • Carbonated water provides carbonation
  • Citric acid, sorbic acid, benzoic acid, and sodium chloride are preservatives
  • Sodium citrate is an acidity regulator
  • Inosital, sucralose, and high fructose corn syrup are sweeteners and provide energy
  • Phosphoric acid prevents decay

carbonated water- H20+CO2- hydration/fizz

high fructose corn syrup- C12H22O11- sweetner and provides energy

phosphoric acid-H3O4P- sharpens flavor of soda, slows growth of mold and bacteria

natural flavors- No certain ingredient can be named

caffeine- C8H10N4O2- central nervous system stimulant and provides energy

No ingredients contribute to body repair.

Glucose, Fructose, and Sucrose are also an energy source used in energy drinks. Most energy drinks have at least one of these simple sugars. Without a metabolic energy source, these sugars are broken down easily.

All three of these sugars are converted into ATP.

When we say something gives us"energy" what do we mean? What is the biological definition of energy?

Could your drink serve different purposes for different consumers?

  • When we say that something gives us energy, we are referring to how sugars increase our metabolic rate.
  • The biological definition of energy is the strength and vitality required for sustained physical or mental activity.

Product Claims

Yes, some consumers use the drink to stay awake at night or in the morning in order to get work done, and others use it to perform at the highest level possible in a sport or other event.

Monster:

  • "Unleash the beast"
  • Tear into a can of the meanest energy supplement on the planet, Monster energy
  • Monster is a wicked mega hit that delivers twice the buzz of a regular energy drink
  • Monster packs a vicious punch but has a smooth flavor you can really pound down
  • Formulated with L-caritine, taurine, ginseg, and B-vitamins

Product Claims

"Sugar high"

A sugar high is not a real thing. There have been many scientific research projects that prove that there is no cause and effect between sugar and hyperactivity.

"A lack of sleep causes a lack of energy"

Coke:

  • "Taste the feeling"
  • "It's the real thing"
  • "Coca-Cola refreshes you best"
  • "pure drink of natural flavors"
  • "Coca-Cola revives and sustains"

Intake of caffeine

  • blood vessels dilate
  • heart rate increases
  • gastric acid is produced
  • metabolic rate increases
  • In low doses, concentration and attention will increase

A lack of sleep interferes with the basic metabolic functions of the body, like storing carbohydrates and regulating hormones. When the body is not properly regulated ATP can not be produced or distributed, therefore causing a lack of energy.

Intake of sugars

  • increases the blood glucose level
  • increase of insulin production
  • storage of excess glucose in the liver and muscles

A Can of Bull?

Should you simply buy a can of Coke® rather than one of these energy drinks?

By: Claire Malit, Ryan Frost, Caroline Reid, Hayley Zakman & Madeline Babros

To get the most energy, and body/cell repair, it makes the most sense to buy the Monster Energy drink. However, if you want a quick boost of energy then it is smarter to go with the can of Coke. Both drinks have caffeine and sugar, so they will both provide energy, but the Monster will help maintain body systems much more than the can of Coke.
