Week 4:
10 Cool 100 You
This week we used our knowledge of Aerospace engineering to construct rockets and airplanes.
Activities:

On Monday, we learned about the basics of rocket and airplane construction by doing activities given to us in a packet.
to split up the work we had Michelle and Rahul working on the glider activities, Andrew and Paula working on the airplan activities, and Kevin working on the rocket activities.

The Glider:
Rahul and Michelle designed and constructed the glider.
our glider was made mainly of foam.
we sanded the wings to that there was optimal wind movement for flight
we added a screw at the front tip to ensure straight, smooth, forward movement

we tried many different designs and materials, but ended up going with our first, foam glider.

3 main functions
Design rocket to fly as high as possible
Release a glider using the Arduino once at the top of parabola
Release parachute on the way down to prevent breaking Arduino
Arduino Glider and Chute Release Mechanism
used triangle shaped claw to hold glider and parachute during takeoff
after a set time... arm releases and the plane and chute are free to fall
In the end both were deployed properly and the final test was a success
Obstacles included...

Although it did not fly as high as expected, the parachute and glider were released and all the tech on board remained in one piece

Design
The rocket was designed in the NASA Rocket design simulator.
The center of pressure and the center of gravity were calculated using this manner.
Paper tube rocket
The paper tube rocket was be a rocket that would be propelled into the air by a small charge, deploy a chute to slow it's decent back down.

Improvements and Failures
Rocket failed to deploy parachute in the final flight.
Most of the rockets' parachutes deployed when the flight charge shot up through the rocket and popped the nose out.
However, this rocket had a layer of thick paper insulation, because the string had been burnt through on the previous test flight.
Could have been improved by finding an alternate solution to fireproofing the string.

Model Plane
Paola and Andrew worked on the plane.
The plane was made entirely out of foam.
The plane had two wings, a propeller, engine, and two tails.

Practice Testing:
While we were testing the plane before the actual test, we discovered a couple of issues.
1st: the screw kept coming off of the propeller.
2nd: the motor and the battery didn't seem to work.
Then, professor Gray helped Paola and I by fixing the propeller and motor.

Actual Testing:
During the actual test, the plane didn't fly straight and it failed for a couple of reasons.
1st: the screw, like earlier, kept falling off the propeller.
2nd: the motor wouldn't go full throttle.
To fix the screw, Paola glued the screw to the propeller; and the propeller started to work better.
However, the motor still wouldn't go full throttle.

So although we did our best to fix it, it wouldn't work.
This week we used the principals of the center of gravity and the center of pressure to create a plane that flew well. The center of gravity must be near or in front of the center of pressure. We also learned how to shape wings in order for the air flow to propel it forward.
we tried to make a smaller plan to reduce the weight on the rocet, but it didnt not fly nearly as well as our original, foam glider, so we went with our original design.
Test Launch:
During the test launch we had not fully installed the parachute and arduino so we set it off with only a parachute loosely attached.













Result: Our rocket went extremely high, by the parachute did not deploy.

We learned that we have to take into account the sturdiness of our design. The glider was released too soon because our mechanism fell off due to the pressure of air resistance very early in its flight.
*to help get an idea of how to construct the plane, Mr. Gray showed us a sped up video of someone making a plane.
make a sturdier mechanism to release the glider.
create an alternative means of protection for the arduino in the case that the parachute does not deploy.
figure out how to make a smaller glider that still flies with the same accuracy as the large foam glider.
