Roman concrete was a revolutionary invention. Most of the buildings in Rome are made out of it and they are still standing 2000 years later.
Roman concrete is made out of a mixture of lime and vocanic ash. This mixture makes it so that it binds to things much better than the Portland concrete that we have today.
For under water building the Romans mixed lime and volcanic ash to make a mortar, which they then packed with volcanic tuff into a wooden frame. The seawater made a hot chemical reaction which hydrated the lime and stuck every thing together.
Since the concrete that we have today does not have the lime and volcanic ash mixture it starts to crumble after only decades of use
