Day Long Activities

Pepper Eating Contest

Competitive Canoeing

  • At 2 pm, students are challenged to eat as many jalapenos in one minute and whoever eats the most wins a variety of Lagniappe prizes.
  • The competition takes place at the Student Union Porch and registration at the aforementioned table is required to enter this brazy competition.

  • Starting at 12:15 pm, 16 teams of four to six people will go head to head in canoe races across Cypress Lake (tipping another team’s canoe is against the rules so don’t try it).
  • The winning team will hold the title of champions until next Lagniappe Day.

1. Leisure Canoeing

2. Crawfish Boil

3. Annual Lake Jump

4. Canoe Races

5. Pepper Eating Contest

6. Rock the Swamp

Origin

  • “Lagniappe,” actually means "something extra."
  • Originally Lagniappe Week, it is now Lagniappe Day (for budgetary reasons lol jk) to increase the likelihood of more attendees.
  • Unofficially, Lagniappe Day is a day for students to kick back, cut up, and eat crawfish during the first week of April.

Crawfish Boil

  • From 11 am to 2 pm, the University Programming Council (UPC) hosts a crawfish boil for the student body.
  • 18,000 pounds of crawfish are boiled and comes at a small price of a single swipe or $8 for those who do not have a meal plan.
  • It’s an all you can eat buffet of crawfish, jambalaya and the classic choice of veggies!

Rock the Swamp

Leisure Canoeing

  • Believe it or not, at 3 pm, graduating seniors participate in the long standing tradition of placing their rings in the swamp.
  • The Alumni Association members are responsible for sending off the seniors’ rings so that they may be guarded in the lake.

A Little Something Extra

Concessions

  • At Cypress Lake from 10 am - 12 pm
  • Students must sign up at the registration table and are encouraged to get a partner.
  • Enjoy a brief journey across the alligator and turtle populated Cypress Lake!

  • Various concession stands will be available around campus until 4pm. Everything from funnel cakes to snowballs will be available.
  • Heads up: Some things may cost money, make sure you find out before you stand in line for an hour with no cash.

Annual Lake Jump

  • The first splash into Cypress Lake was actually made by Philip Beridon in 1977!
  • Unfortunately, Mr. Beridon passed away in 2006 but the tradition of jumping feet first still lives on when the selected Lagniappe Day team jumps in the lake for a swim at 12 pm sharp.
