What is BESR?

What is BBCOR and BESR and What's The Difference?

Now, these bats both look the same, but there is a huge difference.

BBCOR- 2012 DeMarini

CF5

BESR- 2009 DeMarini

CF3

BESR= Ball Exit Speed Ratio. This means that when they measure to see if a bat is BESR certified, they measure how fast (in feet per second and mph) the ball comes off the bat.

BBCOR vs. BESR Baseball Bats

BBCOR= Batted Ball Coefficient of Restitution. What this means is that when they measure this bat to see if it is BBCOR certified, they measure for the "trampoline" effect of the ball.

How will this affect the game?

Many leagues across the nation have all banned BESR bats in play.

As you can see, from the video, a BBCOR bat is almost the exact same as a wood bat.

That was my opinion, but here are some opinions from college coaches who's game it directly affects.

Here is a video from ESPN Sports Science explaining the bat difference and the effect on the game in college baseball.

According to DeMarini and Easton, their BBCOR bats are 15% decrease in performance than their old BESR bats.

I think this will affect the game a lot. I think the number of home runs will decrease steeply, and extra base hits will start to go down as well. Pitchers stats will slightly go up, and the runs will go down a lot over time. I think this will ultimately separate the best hitters from the average hitters and forever change baseball.

There are many reasons for this rule change. BESR bats outperform BBCOR Bats by a lot. As a result, many players are getting hurt (mostly pitchers) from hard hit balls. With BESR, everyone knows that "ping" sound off the bat. With BBCOR, there is no "ping" because the bat sounds exactly like a wood bat. However, even though it is much safer and levels the playing field, it has resulted in a big stat decrease in leagues everywhere.

My Reflection

Here is how University of Tennessee baseball coach Todd Raleigh thinks about how the bat change will affect the game.

Here is how the University of Washington in St. Louis thinks about how the bat change affects the game.

Even though this bat change seems worse, it lets the true hitters really show how good they are and gets them ready for the next level.

The main reason for this transition is because of pitcher safety and the bats giving more power to the hitters.

Now that you have seen how the coaches think about this bat change, it is obvious that this has and will for years to come have an affect on college and high school baseball.

I really enjoyed this project. At first, I wasn't very thrilled about doing this project. I was glad that we were able to pick our own topic and the fact that we had the whole school year to complete this project. But, once we started doing this project, I started to enjoy it more because it was fun to research my topic and learn about it and it was fun to use Prezi and put it into its final form.
