After the explosions, police discovered that six workers died during the explosions which continued for over an hour. About 70 people where injured, 21 of these people where sent to the hospital in a serious condition.
Pollution
The blasts caused the nearby Songhua river to be polluted with an estimated 100 tons of chemicals containing benzene ( a chemical used in petroleum ) that created an 80km long, toxic, chemical slick up the river.
What Happened
On November 13th, 2005 there where a series of explosions in the no.101 Petro chemical plant in Jilin city, Jilin province, China.
The cause of this entire tragedy was when the channel of one nitration tower of the benzene production branch got blocked, and one of the workers made an attempt alone to unblock it, and failed.
The spill into the Songhua river caused an immediate evacuation of tens of thousands of people throughout the Jilin province and the rest of Asia due to the consequences of being exposed to the benzene which reduces white blood cells and is linked to leukemia.
Later after the disaster, there where no toxic gases detected in the affected district, so local residents and students from two collages near the chemical plant where able to return to their residences after the evacuation. Classes and daily lives returned to normal the next day with the plant blocked off.
