• Cows produce milk; which can be used to make butter, cheese, yoghurt and cream.
• Cows are efficient animals; since they produce: dairy product, leather and beef.
• Dairy products provide high levels of calcium, unlike soy products.
A cow releases, on average, about 70 to 120 kg of methane per year. Methane is a greenhouse gas like carbon dioxide (CO2). But the negative effect on the climate from methane is 23 times higher than the effect of CO2. Therefore the release of about 100 kg of methane per year from each cow is equivalent to about 2300 kg of CO2 per year. World-wide, there is about 1.5 billion cattle. So now let’s do a simple calculation: 2300kg of CO2 generated by each cow per year and there are 1.5 billion cows in the world.
So 2300*1,500,000,000=3,450,000,000,000 (3.45 trillion) kg worth of CO2; and that's not all. Cows also generate CO2 from exhaling. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), agriculture is responsible for 18% of the total release of greenhouse gases world-wide (this is more than the whole transportation sector). Besides all that, the growth of cows also require rich land, so people need to cut down trees in forest areas to provide enough food for the cows. Research shows that livestock now use about 30% of the earth's entire land surface. If the percentage of the earth's entire land surface that is inhabited by cattle increases any more, the total amount of gas being expelled into the atmosphere will increase; resulting in more pollution in the atmosphere.
One thing to note is that methane is one of the biggest contributors to the breaking down of the ozone layer.
