Use and Abuse of Water Systems

How are we Caring for our Water Systems?

All in All...

Whatever said and done, drinkable water is decreasing at a substantial rate, as us humans aren't incorporating acts of water conservation to our daily lives. Only 3% of the world's water is fresh, as the remaining is sea water. Less than 1% of water is actually suited for humans to drink, as the 70% of the fresh water is housed in Greenland's and Antarctica's ice caps.As we know, the Great Lakes in Canada house around 21% of the world's fresh water, and we should be lucky to live in Canada. Another reason we should car for our water, is so that we can save money at the same time. For instance, when one lets the tap run while they are brushing, their hydro bill increases, but if they don't let the water run, they will save the money. No one can predict the future successfully, but if humans continue to stop caring for water, we wouldn't prosper with the valuable resource.

How are Humans not Caring for our Water Systems?

It is up to us to help save this significant resource! We must work together in order to achieve this...

There are multitudes of ways in where we care for our precious resource. One way, is when we install low-flow shower heads, as they flow around 9 litres per minute, while everyday ones flow at about 19 litres per minute. Another way, is to get Energy Star appliances, as they conserve water very effectively For example, if one compared the Energy Star dishwasher and a normal dishwasher, the Energy Star one would save more energy and water than the normal one. It'll even save more water than washing dishes by hand! If one was going to dispose of any waste, they should throw it in the garbage can, not in the toilet and flush, as they can save plenty of water. These acts seem very little to do, but more people doing these actions will help in a positive change.

Believe it or not, letting the water run while brushing our teeth is one of the biggest factors towards water wastage. If one brushes without letting the water run, then they will save an average of about 45 to approximately 68 gallons per day!

Another reason why humans are not caring for water systems, is when many take a full bath, rather than a short shower. One could save approximately 45 litres of water if they take a 5 minute shower, as a complete bath uses about 80 litres, and a 5 minute shower takes 35 litres.

In order to conserve water efficiently, one should get Energy Star appliances, rather than regular appliances, as they use less water to do the things they're required to.

Another way how many are harming our water systems, are by washing their vehicle by hand. Only few people realize that the soap and cleaning solutions can harm the water, and other eco-systems in a huge way, as they contaminate the water, making it unsafe to drink. It pollutes the system by seeping through storm drains, which eventually will enter streams, and wetlands. It will not only harm us, but it will poison the biotic life in the water bodies.

  • When brushing teeth, many let the water run
  • People take long baths instead of short showers
  • Water contamination from the soap and cleaning solutions from car washes by hand
  • Industrial waste
  • Watering plants too often
  • Pesticides/fertilizers

Industrial waste also makes a part of harming our water systems. Factories dump what is rendered as useless into streams and lakes to dispose of them, but they don't realize that they are harming the water, and at the same time, themselves. Some examples of what industries and mills dump, are paint, plastic, oil, and radioactive waste. This is also connected to littering, as littering is basically throwing something of no value in an inappropriate location, for instance, in a lake, fields, etc.

This diagram shows the difference of a plant being watered appropriately, and a plant being over watered.

Another reason, this time not as obvious as the previous ones, is when one waters their plants to much. When they do so, it not only wastes water, but it also harms the plant. If a plant is over watered, their soil gets damp. When a plant has wet soil, its roots won't be able to breath, which leads to death of the plant. At the same time, we waste water, as the plant gets no use of the excess of the water.

Finally, the use of pesticides and fertilizers also harm water systems as they contaminate the water systems. In the United States, pesticide residues have been found in rainwater, and groundwater. These materials can poison aquatic creatures, as well as plants.

In order for the human race to survive on our planet, there are several necessities required. Examples of the factors in enhancing human life are food, non-polluted air, clothing, and shelters. One significant necessity which we need, is clean, drinkable water, and as we all know, water is a finite resource. The quantity of drinkable water is decreasing in a multitude of ways, and it is predicted that a time will come when water will be a rare commodity.
