On April 20, 1999 the Columbine shooting occurred. 13 people were killed and schools all around the country took extensive measures to better secure their facilities.

Princess Diana died on August 31, 1997. She died in an automotive accident in Paris, France.

The dissolution of Czechoslovakia occurred on January 1, 1993. This was the self-imposed split of Czechoslovakia into the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

In January of 1996, Google was developed as a research project by Larry Page. This revolutionized how people used the internet.

The murder trial of OJ Simpson occurred on January 12, 1995. He was being tried for the murder of two individuals, his ex-wife and one of her friends.

An affair between the then U.S. president Bill Clinton and white house intern Monica Lewinsky came to light in 1998. On further investigation, Clinton was charged with perjury and later impeached.

On January 17, 1992 a civil war broke out in Bosnia. This was called the Bosnian conflict and was an ethnically rooted war among the Bosniaks, Serbs, and Croats.

In 1994, Bill and Hillary Clinton and their associates were involved in the Whitewater scandal. This investigation surrounded an investment on rental property along the White River that had lost money.

On September 11, 2001, two planes crashed into the world trade center buildings. The planes had been hijacked and the attack killed close to 3,000 people.

The U.S. went to war with Iraq in 2003. The U.S. went into the war to try and disarm the rogue country.

In 2002, president Bush signed the "No Child Left Behind" act. This act required students in grades 3-8 to take standardized testing to make sure no one was falling behind academically.

The United States presidential election between Al Gore and Bush occurred in 2000 and was very controversial. Al Gore had won the popular vote but neither candidate reached the needed 270 electoral votes to win the presidency so the decision was up to the supreme court. Bush was voted president.

On April 20, 2010, the Deepwater Horizon oil spill occurred in the Gulf of Mexico. It is considered to be the largest marine oil spilled. 11 people were killed and 17 were injured.

On April 29, 2011, Kate Middleton and Prince William were married. They were married at the Westminster Abbey in London, England.

On January 9, 2007, Steve Jobs announced the first iPhone. Today, over 1.16 billion iPhones have been sold.

Hurricane Katrina touched ground in the Unites States in August of 2005. The hurricane peaked at a category 5 and hit the U.S. three times before it dissipated.

On November 8, 2016, Donald J Trump was elected president of the United States. Mike Pence then became the vice president of the United States.

On May 4, 2012, Putin won the Russian presidential election. The election caused controversy because there were allegations of voter fraud.

On April 1, 2006 the Serious Organized Crime Agency was created in the United Kingdom. This organization was dubbed the "British FBI."

In the spring of 2014, the Ebola virus broke out in West Africa. 17,100 cases were recorded and 6,000 people died from the virus.

On January 15, 2009, the Miracle on the Hudson occurred. A passenger airplane made an emergency landing on the Hudson river after birds flew into the engine. All 150 passengers survived the crash.

Mark Zuckerberg launched the social media site Facebook in 2004. The site now has 1.59 billion active users.

On May 22, 2017, there was a terrorist attack at an Ariana Grande concert at the Manchester Arena. 23 people were killed in the bombing (including the bomber) and 512 were injured.

On February 14, 2018, there was a shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. 17 people were killed and 17 were injured. This is considered the world's deadliest school massacre in history.

On November 4, 2008, Barack Obama was elected president of the United States. He was the first african american to be elected president.
