The earthquake was generated at the gently sloping fault that conveys the Nazca plate eastward and downward beneath the South American plate. The two plates are converging at 7 meters per century. The fault rupture, largely offshore, exceeded 100 km in width and extended nearly 500 km parallel to the coast. The rupture began deep beneath the coast and spread westward, northward, and southward. As it spread, the fault slip generated earthquake shaking. The fault slip also warped the ocean floor, setting off the tsunami along the fault-rupture area.
The tsunami was generated because of the earthquake. It damaged and destroyed many buildings and roads at Concepcion, Constitucion, Dichato and Pichilemu and also damaged boats.
A tsunami starts when an earthquake in the sea floor is produced, causing the ocean above to shift as well initiating a large wave. Tsunami's aren't large tidal waves. Instead, they start out rather small when they're formed and gather speed and strength as they travel over the open ocean.
The first peak of the tsunami was about 12 cm above the mean sea level. The second peak arrived about one hour and 46 minutes later and was about 20 cm higher than the mean sea level, which was the highest peak among the series of the tsunami waves. The later phases of recognizable tsunami waves continued for about one day after the first arrival of the tsunami.
The government was very quick to respond and started searching for people immediately even though many hospitals were damaged in a week they managed to help all the injured people. Ten days after the disaster many homes had again electricity and water supplies. Many national governments charitable and for profit organizations helped Chile. Countries such as: Argentina, Australia, Bolivia, Brazil, Canada, China, Germany, Spain, USA and UK all helped with the recovery and reconstruction of Chile.

About 50% of the places in Chile were said to be "catastrophe zones". There were infinite damages and many supermarkets were robbed (not only food but also electronic devices and other merchandise) Vandalism had to be controlled so the government sent policemen with tear gas and water cannons. Military police had to arrest 160 people on the 1st and 2nd of March. many people escaped from prison due to the damages of the building.
The earthquake took place in the region of Bio-Bio, Chile. It was devastating with a magnitude of 8.8 the 27th of February 2010 at 03:34:14 AM. It caused wide damage along the coast initiating a tsunami that destroyed many coastal areas of the country. This earthquake caused more than 500 deaths. The epicentre was 200 miles away from the capital city of Chile, Santiago. The focus occurred 35km below the surface of the Pacific Ocean. After the first earthquake the ones that followed were of a magnitude of 5.0 or greater and was felt in Brazil and Argentina. This earthquake was due to subduction of the Nazca plate below the South American plate.
