Properties:
Brominated flame retardants (BFRs) are also referred to as polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs). Widespread use began in the 1970s in TVs and mattresses. It is still used today.
Cleanup:
In some countries, there have been bans put in place against specific PBDEs which have helped with prevention.
Because they are bioaccumulative and in such small particle sizes, there are no real ways to take them out of the environment.
Unfortunately, PBDEs are already in a lot of products ranging from couches to electronics, but there are some ways to minimize your exposure:
inspect and replace old foam items, use a vacuum with a HEPA filter, don't reupholster foam furniture, use caution when removing carpeting, and purchase products that do not use flame retardants.
How it gets into the environment:
Particles are released into the air as dust particles when electronics heat up or when you sit on things like matresess or sofas. They can get into water sources or into the ground as well as the human body.
What makes it a PBT:
