What makes them different?
Puritans- The Puritans had different ways of life than the Quakers did. The Puritans divided their work and were very set on that. The woman did the housework, the men the crops, harvesting, and all the hard outside work. They also went to Meeting twice on Sunday and the services were very long and traditional.
Quakers- The Quakers lived their lives away from the Puritans because they weren't great friends but the Quakers- unlike the Puritans- were friendly to lots of people, even the Native Americans! They believed that good deeds and doing the right thing would get them to heaven. These two religious groups are very different.
Puritans- The Puritan's had a very strong belief of purity. This is how they got their name. They took to the scripture very seriously and it was a very strict religion. They believed that if you weren't a Puritan you wouldn't go to heaven. They were not great friends with the Quakers however because the Quaker's didn't have all of the same beliefs. This ended up causing some problems.
Quakers- The Quakers were way more laid back than the Puritans. They were a simpler group who wanted peace and believed in everyone being equal. In fact, Quaker is said to mean the same thing as friend. Anyway, both of them came to America to create a community that would "purify Christian religion".
Quakers and Puritans are quite different. They have a different lifestyle, they have different beliefs, and most importantly they have many conflicts. Back in the days of colonies that would often have very strong dislikes for each other. In this prezi my hope is to show you those differences. Enjoy!!
The Witch of Blackbird Pond had many examples in the story of Puritanism and Quakerism. Most of the people in the story such as the Wood's, William Ashby, the Cruff's and many more were Puritans. Only one really main character was a Quaker. This was Hannah. Kit came between the two religions and realized that just because Hannah was a Quaker did not mean that she was a horrible, strict, rude lady because she was the exact opposite, it just took a couple people to notice that. This conflict between Puritans and Quakers showed up quite a bit in the story.
Conflicts between Quakers and Puritans were huge. The Puritans believed that the Quakers weren't good enough and that they needed to be Puritans. They wanted them to pay taxes too and the Quakers didn't want that. That caused a conflict. Another thing was because of the "official" religion. The Puritans came to the New England colony first so they thought that their religion should be and was the official religion. Then the Quakers came to America. The Puritans started to persecute them because they were going against the Puritan religion. That of course is also a conflict.
