Space Exploration

1609-1957

1958-1980

The first person to walk on the moon was Neil Armstrong. Buss Aldrin was the second guy to walk on the moon. They spent their time collect soil and studying the surface.

1981 - Present Day

April 12, 1981: Reusable Manned Spacecraft

(USA) National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)

Space Shuttles were used in 135 missions. They were used because they saved a lot of money because they could be reused. Shuttles were also used because they weighed less so they traveled more efficiently in space.

March 1, 1982: Venus Siol Samples and Sound Recording

(USSR) Venera Programme

Venera 13 and 14 were launched five days apart from each other. Once Venera 13 was launched it took four months for it to travel to Venus. Once their it lands using a parachute.

June 13, 2010: 1st Sample from an Astreriod

(USA) Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory for NASA

Shomaker was to study the nearest asteriod to Earth. They were studying what it was made up of, how Eros was created, and it's magnetic field.

JUly 1, 2004: 1st Orbit of Saturn

NASA, ESA, and ASI

The probe that traveled to Saturn is called Cassini–Huygens. It studies Saturn and its many moons. Cassini is the first to enter orbit. Huygens is the lander that at the beginning was conected to Cassini or the orbiter.

What is the Space Race?

June 13, 1983: Spacecraft beyond Neptune

(USA) NASA Ames Research Center in California (Engineers)

It was the first unmanned probe to go outside the solar system. It was launched in Florida. The project ended in 2003.

January 4, 2004: Mars Rover

(USA) NASA

The Spirit Rover is the first rover on mars. It studies the surface, weather, and mars as whole. In 2009 the rover got stuck in soft soil.

Febuary 7, 1984: Untethered Spacewalk

Bruce McCandless II (USA)

It was the fourth flight of the Space Shuttle Challenger. While up it put up two satellites. No one at first new it was the first untethered spacewalk until a while later.

1998: International Space Station

NASA, Roskosmos, JAXA, ESA, and CSA

Many countries come to the ISS and study many things about space and the Earth. Its not far from the Earth and at certain times it can be seen with the naked eye.

Febuary 19, 1986: Long Term Inhabitence

(USSR) Yuri Koptev

Febuary 14, 1990: 1st Picture of the Whole Solar System

(USA) NASA Scientists and Engineers, Jet Propulsion Laboratory

The Space Race was a space exploration competition between the Soviet Union and the United States.

While people where living at the Space Station they would study many things like human biology, physics, astronomy, meteorology. They stayed there for 3,644 days.

The picture of the whole Solar System was taken by Voyager 1. It operated for 36 days, 1 month, and 1 day.

January 2, 1959: Rocket Into Orbit

(USSR) Luna programme Engineers

Luna 1 was the first rocket into the Earth's atmosphere. Luna 1 was also called Mechrta. It had radio equipment including a tracking transmitter and telemetry system, and five instruments to study the Moon.

July 20, 1976: Moon Samples and Photos

(USA) NASA (engineers)

This information gathered was by a something called a Viking Lander. This is half of the Viking Project. There's Orbiters and Landers. The two parts come together to the planet and then they separate to get more things done.

August 7, 1959: Photograph from Earth's Orbit

(USA) NASA Manufacturer: Jet Propulsion Laboratory

The Explorer 6 was launched to study trapped radiation and it tested photographing the Earth's cloud cover. It took the photograph while passing the central Pacific Ocean.

December 2, 1971- Mars Landing

Soviet Mars Program (Engineers in the program)

Octuber 4, 1959: Photo from Other Side of the Moon

(USSR) OKB-1

Mars 3 was the first unmanned space probe to land sofly on the planet mars. Mars 3 was only launched nin days after Mars 2. Mars 2 crashed while trying to land. It was launched by Proton-K rockets.

Luna 3 took let people see the other side of the moon for the first time. This was the third satellite sent to the moon.

April 23, 1971: Space Station

(USSR) Salyut Programme (Engineers in Programme)

April 12, 1961: First Human Spaceflight

(USSR) Yuri Gagarin- astronaut, Sergei Korolev- engineer

It was launched using a Proton-K rocket. The first time a crew stayed there for 23 days. This was the record at that time of the longest someone has been up in space at one time.

Yuri Gagarin was the first human into space. Vostok 1 orbited the Earth one time then landed safety. Yuri survived the whole trip and was ejected from the rocket to prevent injury or death.

July 20, 1969: Humans on the Moon

NASA (USA) Buzz Aldrin and Neil Armstrong

June 16, 1963: First Woman in Space

(USSR) Valentina Tereshkova- astronaut

Vostok 6 carried Valentina Tereshkova into space. It went up into space to see how woman's bodies react to spaceflight.

Febuary 3, 1966: Landing on the Moon

(USSR) GSMZ Lavochkin

It was an unmanned mission to get photographs and information about the moon. It landed softly be using a big bag full of matter.

Timelines

The three main time periods I'll be focuing on are:

  • 1609-1957
  • 1958-1980
  • 1981 - present day

1609: Spotting the Moon

Galileo Galilei

In night in the year 1609 Galileo saw the moon for the first time through his telescope. This was one of the most newest space discovers in history.

March 16, 1626: 1st Liquid Fueled Rocket

Robert H. Goddard (USA)

On a farm in Auburn, Massachusetts Goddard launched the first liquid fueled rocket. Little did he know that this would spark all of the next discovers.

November 3, 1957: 1st Animal into Orbit

(USSR) Nikita Khrushchev

The first animal into orbit was a dog named Laika. She was a stray found on the street. She didn't come back alive because when rushing to get the spacecraft ready the engineers forgot to put on the heat shield so she didn't come back alive.

1629: 1st Personal Rocket

Robert H. Goddard & Students (USA)

With some students Robert designed and launched the first personal rocket. This was only three years after the first liquid fueled rocket he also invented.

October 4, 1957: 1st Artificial satellite Launched

(USSR) Sergei Korolev

1931: German Liquid Rocket

Walter Riedel (Germany)

Sputnik 1 was launched in Tyuratam in the Kazakh Republic into orbit. The round Sputnik 1 worked for three months before coming back into the atmosphere.

Also known as the V-2 rocket was the first long ranged rocket in the German military. Further more the rocket was even the first known rocket to ever enter outer space.

August 21, 1957: First Ballistic Missile

(USSR) Walter Dornberger

Ballistic Missiles launched many satellites including Sputnik 1. The first ballistic missile was called R-7 Semyorka/SS-6 Sapwood. 18 of all the launches were successfull.

August 17, 1933: USSR Rocket

Investigation of Reactive Engines and Reactive Flight team

The Rocket was made by the Investigation of Reactive Engines and Reactive Flight Team. The lighest the rocket has ever gone into the sky is 400 meters.

Febuary 20, 1947: 1st Animal in Space

United States (Researchers)

May 22, 1946: 1st to Reach the Edge of Space

Douglas Aircraft Company & Guggenheim Aeronautical Laboratory (USA)

The first animal in space was Fruit Flies by the United States. They were launched on a V-2 rocket. The flies came back alive.

USA launched a rocket that they designed by themselves withouth going and capturing V-2 rockets. The rocket they designed reach the edge of space (49miles).
