The classical period lasted from 510-323BCE this was from the fall of the last tyrant to the death of Alexander the Great. This was the period of conflict for the Greeks.
First was the war between the Greeks and the Persians. Lead by Sparta and Athens, Greece went to war in 498BCE.
In 480BCE the new Persian king ordered an attack of 60,000 Persians against 5000 Greeks.
Athens and sparta are two of the most well known greek states. Athens was the home of the origination of democracy. Democracy comes from the Ancient greek word; Demokratíc. By 500BC, every grown man had a say in how athens was governed. Sparta was a war based society. It conquered the Neighbouring state, Messenia. The Spartans required a strong army to keep control over the Messenians.
Greek Communities were generally seperated from each other by large mountai ranges. They all had various views on government and what it meant to be a citezen. But as well as being isolated, thy joined in the same festivals, such as the Olympic Games, originating in 776 BCE. They also highly valued some religous sites, such as mount olympus.
The Dark ages started when the Mycenaean civilisation collapsed. The dark ages was a period of decline from 1150 - 800BCE. A period of Transition cled the Archaic Period followed until 600BCE. During this time, Rule by kings were replaced by aristocratic rulers. Iron Tools were engineered to replace Bronze tools and weapons. Population in Greece was increased and colonies were set up around the mediterranean.
Both Athens and Sparta were seriously weakened by the Peloponnesian War, and dominance in the region passed to states further north — first Thebes and then Macedonia. Under Alexander the Great, the Greeks came to rule over a vast empire stretching east to Afghanistan and south to Egypt. However, Rome was now developing as a powerful influence in the Mediterranean, and in 146 BCE Greece became part of the Roman Empire.
Ancient Greece was a fascinating society. It's chronology spans a millenium. This period was filled war, trade and incredible technological advances. It lasted from 1150BCE to 146BCE
