What is causing my allergies?

Aeroallergens

What they are

Aeroallergens are the particles in the air that cause allergic reactions. These substances irritate the respiratory system by stimulating the immune system to release IgE antibodies which binds to the allergen triggering the release of histamine causing inflammation and swelling in the affected area.

Where they come from

Aeroallergens come from many things that can be found around the home such as, house dust (dust mite debris and pet dander), cockroaches (excrement and debris of decaying bodies), plant particles (pollen, ragweed, etc.), and mold/fungus spores

What they cause

Allergies can affect the upper respiratory tract (nose, eyes, ears, and upper palate) the larynx, the lower respiratory tract (lungs, chest, major airways) and the skin. Allergic reactions can include, but are not limited to, any of the following: sneezing, coughing, runny or clogged nose, itchiness in the eyes, nose, or throat, watering eyes, skin irritation, diffiulty breathing, fatigue, and headaches. Allergies can also cause asthma.

Prevention/ management

If your home is suceptible to flooding, you may want to invest in a sump pump, which would remove excess water from the basement. This helps control moisture levels in your home.

How to prevent allergies

You can prevent allergies in young children by breastfeeding them and limiting contact of the child wtih certain allergens using the previous methods. Breastfeeding is very beneficial as it strengthens a child's immune system.
