THE GOBI DESERT

Location 1

Carcross Desert

Most Canadians have never heard of Carcross Desert. Our own Yukon is home to the smallest desert in the world, less than 260 hectares. This desert is the remains of the sandy bottom of a glacial lake left after our last ice age. The dry climate and the strong wind conditions is what created the sand dunes and what allows little vegetation to grow.

Gobi Desert Facts:

-Gobi means "Waterless Place"

- It is approximately 500,000 square miles

- Only 5% is sand dunes

- Contains 5 disctinct ecoregions

- Currently expanding due to desertification

- Lies in a rain shadow caused by the Himalayas

- Fifth largest desert in the world

- It is a cold desert

- Populated mostly Mongols and Han Chinese

- Located on a Plateau around 3,000 to 5,000 feet above sea level

Location 2

Sonoran Desert

The Sonoran Desert takes up over 100,000 square miles and covers parts of two states and two countries: the southern parts of Arizona and California in the United States and large parts of the states of Sonora, Baja California Norte and Baja California Sur in Mexico.

Location 3

A Hot and Dry Desert is, as you can tell from the name, hot and dry. Most Hot and Dry Deserts don't have very many plants. They do have some low down plants though. The only animals they have that can survive have the ability to burrow under ground. This is because they would not be able to live in the hot sun and heat. They only come out in the night when it is a little cooler.

Kalahari Desert

•The Kalahari Desert came into existence approximately sixty million years ago along with the formation of the African continent.

•The desert covers approximately 350,000 square miles (900,000 square kilometers) encompassing most of Botswana and parts of Namibia and South Africa.

•The desert gets its name from the Tswana word Kgala ("the great thirst"), or Kgalagadi, Khalagari, or Kalagare, meaning "a waterless place".

•The Kalahari Desert actually has huge areas that are good for grazing and support more animals than are found in a true desert.

A cold desert is a desert that has snow in the winter instead of just dropping a few degrees in temperature like they would in a Hot and Dry Desert. It never gets warm enough for plants to grow. Just maybe a few grasses and mosses. The animals in Cold Deserts also have to burrow but in this case to keep warm, not cool. That is why you might find some of the same animals here as you would in the Hot and Dry Deserts.
