Atleast 200,000-250,000 rebels

Didn't pull out until 1989

Led by the Soviet Union due to the "chauvinistic sentiments and an anti-Soviet hysteria being whipped up in the United States."

Included East Germany, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Cuba, Bulgaria, Afghanistan, Poland, Vietnam

Joined by a total of 14 boycotting nations

Iran and Albania boycotted both games

1980 Summer Olympics- MOSCOW

Effects and Aftermath

USA started a boycott to protest against the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan

Eventually, most of their allies joined in- including Japan, West Germany, China, the Philippines, Argentina, Canada

UK, France, Australia supported the boycott but allowed athletes to participate if they wanted to

Overall, 65 invited countries did not participate, though not all for the boycott

USA saw the 1984 boycott as 'revenge' for the humiliation of the last games

USSR saw it as 'protection' for their athletes due to the anti-Soviet propaganda

Was blown up by the medias of the seperate countries- only served to increase the tension and bad feelings between Communist and capitalist/liberalistic nations.
